Writing Skills Overview

Writing is an extremely complex process that requires solid reading skills. So if your child is struggling with reading, they will likely struggle with writing as well.

The pieces involved in writing are:

  • Spelling
  • Writing Fluency
  • Writing at the sentence level, paragraph level and essay level
  • Visual Motor Integration Skills
  • Oral Language Skills
  • Age Appropriate Vocabulary

When a child struggles with any of these pieces, they need to be evaluated. Every piece is connected, so a disconnect in one area, leads to a disconnect in other areas. If their spelling is poor, that may be hindering them from using grade appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure. The ability to brainstorm and outline is also very important.

Determining where the breakdown occurs allows you to help via accommodations and interventions.  But different accommodations and interventions are needed for different difficulties, so determining where the breakdown is occurring is crucial in order to help a struggling writer become an independent writer. We can help determine where that breakdown is
occurring.

INTERVENTIONS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ACCOMMODATIONS, SO DO NOT HESITATE TO HAVE YOUR CHILD TESTED TO FIND THEIR APPROPRIATE INTERVENTION METHOD!
